Dive Brief:
- Bird scooters are now available to rent through the Lyft app in more than 25 U.S. cities, the companies announced yesterday.
- The agreement builds on Lyft’s existing partnership with Spin, which was acquired by Bird in 2023. The integration of Bird vehicles onto Lyft’s app will give users access to thousands more scooters across the U.S., according to a press release.
- Bird emerged from bankruptcy in April and now operates under a new private parent company named Third Lane Mobility.
Dive Insight:
Shared dockless e-scooter rides grew 15% in the U.S. last year, compared with 2022, according to a July report by the National Association of City Transportation Officials. However, the 65 million trips recorded in 2023 were below the peak of 86 million reached in 2019.
Riders can rent and pay for Bird scooters in the Lyft app in cities where they are available and can unlock the scooter on the app by scanning the vehicle’s QR code.
“We continue to find new ways to integrate into like-minded urban transportation solutions such as those provided by Lyft, as our ultimate goal is to make it just as easy to get around cities via multimodal transportation as it is with a personal car,” said Stewart Lyons, co-CEO of the Bird and Spin brands, in a statement.
Michael Brous, Lyft’s head of bikes and scooters, said, "Working together with Bird allows us to expand access to scooters so we can serve more people in more areas in the U.S., all in the Lyft app.”
