Some 3,000 leaders from U.S. cities large and small came to Washington, D.C., the week of March 10 for the National League of Cities Congressional City Conference. This year’s conference coincided with the new Trump administration’s rapid-fire federal policy changes and a federal funding freeze that is being challenged in numerous courts. At the same time, cities face ongoing issues such as the shortage of affordable housing, public safety concerns and construction and maintenance of critical infrastructure such as streets and transit facilities.
Vice President JD Vance and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin spoke at the conference about housing and how the administration wants to work with cities and counties in a spirit of “cooperative federalism.” Mayors, council members and representatives of issue-oriented organizations joined panels to discuss these and other issues.
